The Path of Salvation

Salvation begins with God, not us. We do not earn it or deserve it. Scripture makes this clear: “By grace you have been saved through faith… not as a result of works” (Ephesians 2:8-9). God’s love is shown in that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

At the same time, the New Testament shows us how this gift is received. In Acts 2, people heard the gospel, responded to Jesus, and were added to a community of believers. Repentance is turning away from sin with a decision to follow Him.

Step 1: Knowledge — Hear and Understand the Gospel

The process begins with hearing and understanding the message about Jesus. In Acts 2, when the crowd heard Peter’s preaching, they were “pierced to the heart” (Acts 2:37). They came to understand who Jesus is—the Son of God, crucified and raised—and that He is now both Lord and Christ.

Faith begins this way. “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). This is more than simply listening; it is understanding and accepting the truth about Jesus and what He has done. This knowledge forms the foundation for everything that follows.

When the people understood the message, they immediately asked, “What shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). Peter’s answer was clear: “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38).

This response is not about earning salvation, but about surrendering to Christ. Repentance is turning away from sin with a decision to follow Him. Confession acknowledges Jesus as Lord. Baptism is the moment where that faith responds in obedience.

Romans 6 explains the meaning of baptism: we are united with Christ in a likeness of his death, burial and resurrection. Having put to death our old self through repentance, we are buried with Christ by baptism into death and are raised with Him to walk in newness of life. Baptism is the bridge between death and life. It is here that the blood of Christ cleanses us of sin and we receive God’s grace through faith to begin a new life.

Salvation is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning. In Acts 2, those who were baptized were added to the body of believers and devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, worship, and prayer (Acts 2:41-42). They didn’t just begin a relationship with Christ—they were brought into a people.

Following Jesus was never meant to be done alone. God places each believer within a church so they can belong, build relationships, and grow alongside others who are walking the same path.

Change does not happen overnight. There will be struggles, questions, and moments of growth over time. But within a church family, you are encouraged, supported, and helped forward. You learn together, serve together, and walk through life together.

Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are “created in Christ Jesus for good works.” Those good works are lived out in everyday life, side by side with others who are also learning to follow Jesus more faithfully.
